New Fragrances : Chanel, Givenchy and More

It looks to be a busy fall in terms of new fragrances! Chanel is preparing to launch a new fragrance called Chanel No 5 Eau Premiere, which "will incorporate all of No.5's original ingredients--including rose absolute, jasmine, neroli and ylang-ylang--but rebalanced in a lighter, airier formula by Jacques Polge."

Givenchy will follow the recent trend of dipping into the archives by relaunching Eau de Givenchy, Givenchy III, Le De, Monsieur and Eau de Vetyver. L'Interdit will also be a part of this collection.

In other news, we are to anticipate a new launch from Prada called Infusion d'Iris as well as from Marc Jacobs called Modern Gardenia. There will also be a release from Judith Leiber in September. "The eponymous scent, featuring Italian bergamot as well as jasmine and rose notes, was created by Karine Dubreil of Mane and was inspired by Leiber's new fine jewelry line." Tom Ford For Men, Tom Ford Voile de Fleur, Guerlain My Insolence, Dior Midnight Poison, Emporio Armani Diamonds, Emilio Pucci Vivara, Acqua di Parma Colonia Intensa, Monique Lhuillier, Banana Republic Malachite and Cordovan, Jo Malone White Jasmine and Mint, and Thierry Mugler La Part des Anges are among other fragrances to be launched in the fall. Wow! Super thrilled about the Givenchy reissues! Of course, you never know if they'll be anything like the originals. There seems to be a slight infatuation with iris these days, don't you think? Amusing. :) Very curious about the new Thierry Mugler and am chuckling at My Insolence.

A few days ago, I got an ad from a department store saying re-launches of Nina Ricci's Coeur-Joie, Cappicci and ohters, all perfumes with Lalique bottles. Re-issues are booms?? I am not a fan of Nina Ricci line never the less I am intrigued with those trends.

I don't know about Givenchy Vétiver being 'generally acknowledged as the best': I was always told, when I lived in France, that Guerlain Vétiver was the best there was. Certainly, several extremely elegant French women I know (two of them very good friends of mine) have worn it exclusively for nigh on 40 years.

Bela, well I didn't say it, Luca did! I've never tried it. I think he meant it was acknowledged amoung those in the industry, not consumers. He did write, however, that Guerlain was tied for the best alternative, in the absence of the Givenchy.

Ina, iris is a note that immediately can lend a fragrance that refined, elegant quality. I do not mind this infatuation.

I would say that the formulas will be tweaked. Many of the materials used in the 1950s-60s (and even as far as a few years ago) are no longer allowed to be used.

B, if they smell great, I do not mind the names, but yes, too many flankers can really dilute the appeal of the original for me.

J, I cannot agree more--Guerlain Vetiver is often consider to be the gold standard for vetivers. Although I will not claim to have tried all of the vetivers out there, it is one of my own favourites.

E, I remember that article. Here is the quote: "Experts agree that the best classical vetiver of all time was Givenchy’s, which never sold well but was kept in production because Hubert de Givenchy wore it. When he passed away, so did the fragrance. Next best was a tie between the strikingly fresh and carefree Carven and the excellent, darker and richer Guerlain." Although I must say that I did not care that much for Carven. It struck me as pale and thin. Perhaps, whatever I tried was already tweaked.

Well, V, I certainly prefer the Guerlain, as well. Interestingly, he doesn't mention what "style" the Givenchy is in - this was from the "Grass Roots" post, right? I wonder whether it will be a "true" vetiver, a la Vetiver Extraordinaire, or a more embellished, like Annick Goutal's or Serge's for example?

E, I think that it is a classical one, like Guerlain. I've always wondered what exactly made Givenchy's more outstanding. Perhaps, Luca or someone who has tried it could tell us. I would also be curious to know how the reissue would compare to the original.

Thank you so much, you have made my day. L'Interdit was my all time fave. Then one day years ago I bought yet another new bottle and it didn't smell the same. I talked with the saleswoman and I think she thought I was mad ... and then I found out yes, it had been reformulated.

Do you have any more information on the original L'Interdit's revival?

HI, my wife always wore the original L'interdit, but I have been unable to find the original since the new issue, which does not compare. It is our 10th Wedding Anniversary this year and I would love to suprise her with a bottle of the original - even if it is part of a gift set. Can you confirm that this collection is the original and available to buy? Thanks MG

I was shocked when I read Dr. Turin's comment about Hubert de Givenchy. As far as I know, he is still very much alive! M. Turin really should correct this. Perhaps it was a error in translation.

At any rate-I'm yearning to smell the original Le De and L'interdit. I'm a huge Givency/Hepburn fan as well as a fan of powdery frargances.
