The rise of the house of Guerlain parallels the growth of the Second French Empire, but whereas Second Empire collapsed after after France's defeat in the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871), the house continued to thrive, in many ways examplifying the greatness of French perfumery. If you like Guerlain, then you might find this London Times article very interesting.
Thanks for this link, Victoria! Timesonline seems to have a nice collection of perfume-related articles in their database. I think I'll subscribe to their archive service, reading this one made me curious...

Marcello, you are welcome! I was thinking of suggesting these archives to you, because they indeed feature some nice articles. Needless to say, I always welcome more material on the topic of perfume!

Their online archives go back to 1985, and I'm not sure there are alternative ways to dig up older articles from the London Times. Hopefully they will extend their online collection in the near future.

Hmmm... a sneaky way to get into newspaper archives... go to google, and c/p the most distinctive phrase from the article. Usually newspaper archives have at least one or two sentences from the fully article. Then hit "cached" when you see the google result and it may come up.

Anya, that is such a clever way to get into the archives. Thank you, I will definitely try to do that.
