BBC reports that the Stilton Cheese Makers Association (SCMA) has launched Eau de Stilton, a perfume that the SCMA hopes would encourage people to eat more stilton. As one of the SCMA representatives, Nigel White noted, "The perfume has a very earthy, musky, herby type of background which is very different to the very sweet perfumes you smell wafting down the street as someone walks past you." "Blue Stilton cheese has a very distinctive mellow aroma and our perfumier was able to capture the key essence of that scent and recreate it in what is an unusual but highly wearable perfume that we are very proud to put our name to. "
For the time being, the fragrance is available in sample form from the SCMA, however, if it is to prove commercially successful, the mass distribution is planned. More information on the creation of the perfume is available from the Stilton Cheese Makers Association, which also lists the notes for the perfume as including yarrow, angelica seed, clary Sage and valerian. The samples can be obtained by emailing [email protected]. Thanks to Paru for the link.
To my knowledge, this is the first time that cheese has served as a direct inspiration for a perfume, although a clever Canadian Gouda cheese ad has often been construed as advertising a fragrance. It is rather amusing, and I encourage you to take a look.
"...very different to the very sweet perfumes you smell wafting down the street as someone walks past you."
Sounds like my kind of scent!
I love Stilton and rarely need encouraged to eat more.

I love this idea... Amines! Sulfuraceous notes! Moldy drydown!
Seriously, this sounds way more interesting than another fruity floral.

daruma here. This sounds like the sort of smell that emanates from middle aged men's shoes on a hot day on the London Underground.

Hmmmm. . . I thought Jardenia smelled like blue cheese, but I guess that wasn't intended:)

I love the Gouda advertisement! I was laughing hysterically!

The ad is hysterical. And that Stilton scent sounds like something I might actually like :-)

Wow! I need to get a sample of that stuff.

Wow! What makes me even consider sampling this in a dark cellar with a nice glass of wine is beyond me! :)

Mike, I also need no encouragement, but I am very curious to sample this fragrance. Actually, valerian root oil smells very much yeasty, and I can just picture the scent in my mind.

Evan, I cannot agree more! I will take Eau de Stilton over another fruity-floral any day.

Daruma, now, that is not the most pleasant association one could make. :)

Judith, yes, I thought that Jardenia smelled like cheese, although the cheese in question for me was brie. And I agree with you that it probably was not intended.

Paru, so was I, when I first saw it. Katie of Scentzilla posted a few funny ads, and this was one of them. I laughed and laughed.

Marina, this whole discussion made me crave Stilton, so I just made a sandwich with Stilton and pears. So, I guess that the SCMA's aim is achieved in my case. :)

Peter, so do I! Sounds fascinating.
Posted by: BoisdeJasmin | May 12, 2006 at 15:09
Constance, I have the same craving! :)

my first reaction is EWWWW~
but then, I know that perfumes always take me by surprise so I'd like to try it. I'm such a perfume whore, I can't help it!

L, I bet this one will be surprising. Actually, the description is quite appealing--fruity, earthy, herbal. We shall see...

I am so tempted to write for a sample. :)

Cynthia, I already did. I am very curious to try it.
