Shiloh by Hors la Monde : New Fragrance

Shiloh (meaning "his gift" in Hebrew) is the latest fragrance created by perfumer Michel Roudnitska. Collaborating with Symine Salimpour, he composed a fragrance that combines bergamot, rose, patchouli, and woods in a dramatic and ravishing manner. Hors là Monde, the company created by Salimpour, has witnessed a law suit from Angelina Jolie over the name Shiloh.

As Washington Post article mentions, "After a five-month legal battle with perhaps the most famous mother and child on the planet, Angelina Jolie and Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt, Salimpour won the legal right to call her new perfume Shiloh." Salimpour began developing the fragrance long before Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt was born on May 27, 2006. Interesting news and a silly law suit, with due respect to Anelina Jolie, whom I love dearly as an actress and a model. I'm glad it did not fall through, because it would have made no sense at all to claim "copyright" to a name of a person. Trademark laws are suppose to prevent confusion between different brands of a similar kind of product... Or different brands selling similar goods.

On another note, Shiloh does not mean "his gift" in Hebrew. It is a name of the place where the arc of the covenant was kept in the holy tent after the Israelites arrived to Israel but before the first temple was built.

Can I just say I want to slap Angelina Jolie in the face? Who does she think she is? Ugh. I briefly tested Shiloh but not enough to make a conclusive opinion. Am definitely looking forward to smelling it again.

That is shocking, that a lawsuit could even get started on such a flimsy premise. As Chaya says, one's first thought is of the Civil War, and as beautiful as the sound of the name may be, it does have that sad note to it...
Sounds like such an appealing fragrance, so glad they could name it as they pleased.

Hors là Monde?? ...deconstructed french, disseminated hebrew and a ludicrous lawsuit with a celebrity to create a buzz for one more niche fragrance line on the market. hopefully Michel Roudnitska may bring substance, authenticity and insight to this project.

While Hors la Monde makes little sense to me, it is not incorrect to say that Shiloh means "gift." It is a word with several meanings and with a number of interpretations depending on the context of its usage, according to some of my Hebrew friends. I 'm taking Jolie 's side here. launching this Shiloh fragrance is no or very little coincidence. whatever it means in hebrew this sounds first and foremost like a celebrity child 's name, personnally would I be launching a fragrance I would never go for this kind of confusion and name association. anyways I 'm sure that "gift" won 't come up as a gift on its pricetag!
