Saturday's Perfume Talk will be about romantic fragrances. Then, please come back on Sunday for the reviews of my three favorite fig scented candles.
Just as I was scheduling the posts to be published on their respective days, I realized that romance and figs is not as far-fetched of a pairing as it may seem. According to my historian friend, in the times of ancient Rome, the milky sap of the wild fig tree was among the sacrificial offerings to Juno, a goddess who among her many duties is also the patroness of marriage.
Have a wonderful rest of the week!
Figs and romance are an excellent pairing! They are a time-honored fertility symbol after all, right up there with pomegranates. And just a terribly sexy fruit. In fact, I was just reading a collection of Susan Orlean profiles recently and one was about a fruit vendor who enjoyed making creative signs for his wares. He had saved his favorite one up on the wall in his office. It read:
Raw Sex.
Fresh Figs.
Same Thing.
69 cents.
I am still wondering whether it was 69 cents a fig, or a pound, or... ;) Looking forward to the candles!

I love it! What a witty, clever sign. A ripe fig is such a sexy fruit. I was surprised to discover that some varieties of figs grow really well in NJ-NY area, and this summer I used to buy a little basket time to time from the Union Square market. I would also pick up some bread and goat cheese, and this would be my lunch on the bench overlooking the market area. Somehow it felt like such a simple thing, but made me feel very good and re-energize me for the rest of the day ahead.

Oh, perfect...what a lovely blog discovery! I love the scent of figs and will certainly be back for your verdict. If you're interested, I blogged about the scent of figs in Provence (in January's archive).

Thank you, Deborah! I will check it out. I have only dried Mediterranean figs now, but they will do to remind me of the taste and scent of figs in the south of France. :)
