When every other celebrity or celebrity wannabe has a perfume, it was surprising that Madonna still did not launch one. This will change in spring of 2012, when Truth or Dare by Madonna will be released. Created by Givaudan perfumer Stephen Nilsen in collaboration with Madonna and Coty, the fragrance will be a white floral with gourmand accents. Truth or Dare by Madonna will aim at an older demographic than most celebrity scents, women aged 27 to 50.
As Madonna said to WWD, "My oldest memory of my mother is her perfume, I carry it with me everywhere. She always smelled like gardenias and tuberose, an intoxicating mixture [that was] feminine and mysterious. I wanted to re-create this scent, but with something fresh and new about it as well."
The notes include gardenia, tuberose and neroli, with jasmine, benzoin tears, white lily petals, vanilla absolute, caramelized amber and sensual musk aura. Truth or Dare brand will eventually expand to include shoes, handbags, lingerie and other accessories. The fragrance is scheduled to appear at Macy's end of March-early April and to roll out globally in May. Eau de Parfum will be sold in various sizes priced $39 to $68.

Benzoin tears?

I think that's the correct name - not a melodramatic description - for the teardrop shape that benzoin resin takes when oozing out of the trees from which it is collected.

Definitely truth! I do not anticipate any dare from the note description.

A perfume aimed at "older" demographic", oh great! I thought Madonna who is 50+ (looking superhot and superfresh) and who only dates hot young brazilian and french studs claimed she was the new 25 so basically she's not allowed to wear her own fragrance, she's too young!
This demographic thing in perfumery is the most ludicrous thing there is! In the 80s when I was in my teens, I wore Caron, Patou and Guerlain classics and so did the other french girls! Also, what do you wear when you're 50+? Does this mean you belong to the geriatric demographic, too old and worthless, basically you're garbage, so why would you wear perfume anyways right!!??

I agree with Emma. In the United States women over the age of 50 are invisible at best. Yes, Madonna dates young Brazillian and French studs-- but not Young American studs. Most young American men would recoil at the thought (although they might be enticed by the lure of an MTV reality show based on fake-dating her!) Perfumes preferred by WOMEN (not girls) are often referred to as "old lady" perfumes here-- a term which I find offensive. In our society if you're not young you're nothing.
But, on the subject of that bottle-- how does someone who helped sexualize high school girls long before the likes of Britney, et al get off using a religious symbol as her theme?

I ADORE Madonna. ADORE her. And I just can't wait to smell this new fragrance.
But that bottle looks like the white coffin of a child. This does not bode well.
And by this does not bode well, I mean change the damn thing NOW.

Well, I don't adore Madonna anymore...probably not for the last 25 years. The story of her mother and white lilies is as old as her marketing; she already used that story for a lot of other ideas. In regards to celebrity perfumes: well if she had done this 25 years ago, yes, great options for a couple of perfumes but now? I do hope that women of a certain age don't fall for Madonna's cheap marketing tricks and buy something more substantial. I don't know any celebrity fragrance except for Elizabeth Taylor's (and that's because she started the fad) I would ever want to smell. Both flacon and scent don't seem to be special. Regarding the above: "if you are not young, you are nothing", it depends on how one defines oneself. I think being older in a latin country is much more difficult than being a woman of a certain age in the USA or Northern Europe.

Well looks like Madonna still has a strong gay following, guess who's going to buy her perfume? ;-))

I'm just surprised it's taken Madonna this long to bring out a celebrity perfume. I like the bottle and I can't wait to try it!

I actually liked the story, because I can relate to her idea--the memories of my mom's perfume are very strong for me.

Yes, that's right. It is an actual name for a raw material, not just a marketing talk.

Seems very well-behaved and safe. Not like Madonna in her heyday at all!

I hear you! :(

I hate the term "old lady" with passion! It is so commonplace that people do not even stop to think what it means when they utter it.
Posted by: Victoria | November 05, 2011 at 10:43
Not crazy about that bottle either, not because of any sinister connotations, but because it just looks run of the mill.

Elizabeth Taylor White Diamonds is fantastic! So bold and dramatic. Not necessarily something I would wear today, but I appreciate it.

White florals are very popular with American women (and in Italy as well.)
Posted by: Victoria | November 05, 2011 at 10:46
I was also surprised by that. I would have imagined that she would be one of the first to do it.
Posted by: Victoria | November 05, 2011 at 10:47
I am not really buying the story. I've heard it many times already from J Lo, Eva Mendez, Beyonce. I think Eva Mendez suggested that her mother's perfume was Angel... highly unlikely

I seem to remember reading that she wore Fracas a lot. Which makes me slightly hopeful.
Posted by: Style Spy | November 07, 2011 at 09:06
I'm always up for a fragrance with gardenia!
Posted by: kuri | November 07, 2011 at 10:24
Maybe not...Apparently Madonna used to wear Fracas, which I wouldn't call well-behaved (it's a monster to me). I'm hopeful that she'll do something interesting, because if Madonna doesn't who can?

I'M READY FOR IT, HOPE IT'S A FRAGRANCE THAT CAN COMPLEMENT ME :)
